Irish by birth, John Field gained an international reputation as one of the finest pianists of his time, with an influential delicacy and nuance in his playing that is expressed in his innovative and poetically lyrical Nocturnes. Field's earlier Sonatas are more classical in feel, but their sense of flow and dramatic narrative exhibit qualities that are developed and given added virtuoso panache in his fine Piano Concertos, works admired by Liszt, Chopin and Schumann. 'Benjamin Frith has done a stellar job in bringing these concertos into the sunlight, brilliantly supported by the Northern Sinfonia under David Haslam' (Pianist magazine).
"Frith's playing is delectably coaxing, and he makes these Nocturnes so often seem exquisitely like Chopin, yet he still catches their naive innocence" Penguin Guide [Piano Music]
"Both works are played with effortless fluency, plus all the immediacy and freshness of new discovery. In No 1 Frith is acutely responsive to the delicate charm of the Scottish-inspired ('Twas within a mile of Edinboro' Town) slow movement. He makes one aware of Field's teasing delight in the unexpected in the smiling outer movements, to which he brings a wide range of tone, and piquant accentuation in the last. There's warm, sympathetic support from the Northern Sinfonia under David Haslam." Gramophone [Ctos 1 & 3]
"Frith's articulation is sparklingly clear throughout with rapid scales and decorations pearly and wonderfully even, helped by the relatively intimate acoustic of the theatre in Gosforth where the recordings were made." Gramophone [Ctos 5 & 6]
""Overall, this is a great disc, thoroughly enjoyable and certainly well worth seeking out. I would also recommend Mr. Frith's earlier CDs in this series as these are just as good. I am left pondering why it took Naxos so long to release this disc. I see that the Seventh Concerto recording dates from 1996 and the remainder of the disc from 2013."
