"Originally issued in 1979, 'Broken English' is a powerful, dark and emotional masterpiece by an intriguing woman.

Few artists can create such intimacy as Marianne Faithfull. She has a rare ability to transform any lyric into something compelling and utterly personal; her music has the texture of autobiography, as though informed by her own experiences.

Marianne's story, of course, has been well documented; she was introduced to the Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham at a London party in 1964. She was then 17 and still at school. Oldham, captivated by her, offered to make a record with Marianne. A few months later she launched her music career with "As Tears Go By", the first song ever written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was a Top 10 UK hit in 1964 and the rest, as they say, is history.

The breathy, frail, and innocent voice of the '60s, wilted by too many years of hard living, now conveys deep layers of emotion, and the rasp in her voice goes straight to the soul.

This is all evident in abundance on 'Broken English' - from the incisive, reggae fueled title track through to the explicit and venomous "Why'd Ya Do It", (which was quickly banned and removed from the LP record upon initial release). Even now in the 21st century, this controversial song still sounds fresh and confrontational, and her great version of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" is similarly direct. Other highlights include the charming, melodic "Eyes of Lucy Jordan", the eerie yet poetic "Witch's Song", and thought provoking "Guilt".

A brilliant album that demands your attention, 'Broken English' is a timeless recording which captures this fractured, intelligent songbird in sharply subversive style."
