Spectrum

[ Atlantic Records / CD ]

Release Date: Monday 29 January 2001

'Spectrum' is the best jazz / rock fusion album ever recorded - featuring Tommy Bolin on guitar and Jan Hammer on keyboards.

"The best jazz / rock fusion album ever recorded! 'Spectrum' features drummer Billy Cobham's most inspired playing and compositions, along with the incredible performances of Tommy Bolin on guitar and Jan Hammer on keyboards. (Cobham and Hammer were key members of the phenomenal Mahavishnu Orchestra, who were guided through the '70s by guitarist John McLaughlin).

'Spectrum' was recorded at a time when musicians were given freedom to produce music which they totally believed in. Cobham and friends took this flexibility to the extreme and created a powerful, creative, musical milestone.

It inspired many musicians over the years including Jeff Beck, Deep Purple (who chose Bolin to replace Ritchie Blackmore on the strength of this recording) and a multitude of drummers. 'Spectrum' was also sampled considerably on Massive Attack's 'Blue Lines' LP.

Tommy Bolin was in James Gang at the time but in this setting he was truly in his element. This album captures the heart, soul and genius of Tommy's free form guitar playing.

'Spectrum' is a brilliant instrumental album that sounds just as good now as it did 30 years ago. Lovers of fine musicianship and ALL drummers should own a copy. Essential!"
