Listen to how sensitively she characterizes the starving child's complaints and the mother's calmer replies. This is great Lieder singing, subtle but vivid, never crudely exaggerated, the emotion projected through voice with artless simplicity and directness. Both Adrian Boult (Songs of a Wayfarer) and André Vandernoot (Kindertotenlieder) also accompany quite ably, the Philharmonia sounds marvelous, and the sonics have held up very well.
