VH1 Divas Live

VH1's "Divas Live" was the American video channel's highest-rated special ever, and here, the six artists strut their stuff under the banner of sisterhood, even joining together on a number of the set's 14 cuts. The set is an engaging demonstration of the reins that songstresses currently hold over pop. Twain is the real treat here, blending attitude with elegance on her raucous "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" and the crisply delivered "You're Still The One."

Dion demonstrates how she got where she is, liberating the audience with a no-holds-barred throwdown of "River Deep Mountain High" and a scorching rendition of the ubiquitous "My Heart Will Go On." Estefan and Carey earn passing marks, though the latter is left in the dust attempting to duet with a holler-happy Franklin on "Chain Of Fools." A better meeting of the divas is "A Natural Woman" with the legendary Carole King, Dion, Twain, and Estefan, which perhaps best captures the intended essence of the event.
