John Wellington Wells, the Sorcerer of the title, brews a magic love-potion in a tea pot with complicated consequences for the villagers of Ploverleigh in what is often described as the G&S version of Donizetti's 'L'elisir d'amore'.
"The orchestral playing is especially fine, as is the singing of the D'Oyly Carte Opera chorus, at their peak. John Reed gives a truely virtuoso performance of his famous introductory song, while the spell-casting scene is equally compelling. The sound is well up to Decca's usual high standard and the CD transfer is first rate."
