Daniel Barenboim has written that: "If one wishes to play Bach on the piano, the piano must be used like an orchestra," and suggests that different moments in the Goldberg Variations should evoke a trumpet, a harpsichord or even a human voice. This live recording was made in Barenboim's native Buenos Aires at the magnificent Teatro Colón, where "one can play for more than 3,000 people, yet feel the intimate surroundings of a small room.
"Daniel Barenboim is a consummate pianist, though he is now known more for his conducting. His recording of the Goldbergs is both personal and sensitive, and he plays this work with a focus very different from your average baroque performer. Differently by the instrument, naturally, but also by his use of legato and phrasing, which is far more romantic than baroque. But he never loses sight of the original tone of this music, and at times his playing is breathtaking." MusicWeb
