Sings with soulful spirituality and grooves with heavenly grace
Virginia Rodrigues' second album does justice to her extraordinary voice. From the moment she burst onto the scene it was immediately voice: ethereal, soaring, pure - words do it little justice.
Caetano Veloso [the man who originally discovered her] has taken matters in hand for this new disc and put the musical direction in charge of his own longstanding musical arranger, Jaques Morlenbaum [resulting in a marvellous album].
Morelenbaum has framed her voice in arrangements which meld African percussion and rhythm with the cello, violins and clarinet of his own conservatoire background. The result is a revelation: restrained, powerful when it needs to be, and the perfect frame for Virginia's voice.
Slower and more lyrical than most of her first album, it allows Rodrigues's superb voice room to relax and excel.
This album is essential listening.
