Recorded May 1992
Virtuoso violinist Paul Giger is renowned for his brilliance and diversity, accomplished in classical music, folk, and amazing solo improvisations. Schattenwelt, close in spirit to his mesmerising Chartres, was recorded by Giger late at night in the mystical Propstei St. Gerold, the recording venue used by Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble for Officium. Schattenwelt reflects his talents as both performer and composer, featuring the ballet music, Labyrinthos and the cradle song ⁄Bombay (Good Night)◊, inspired by an Indian journey.
Gramophone magazine on Giger:
"Harmonics, glissandos, multiple stops, devilfis trills, fancy bowings, the noises of wood and horse-hair, all have a place in the design. In virtusosity he far outclasses many concert violinists, and his resourcefulness and assurance breathe vitality into the work."
