"In terms of recorded sound this is the best Mahler/Cooke Tenth currently available. As an interpretation it is imbued with polish, nobility and integrity."
- MusicWeb Sept 2000
"This is a worthwhile addition to the collection - a Tenth to live with perhaps"
- Gramophone Magazine
Chailly's latest release is a re-issue of his distinguished Mahler 10. It has been "decoupled" (the original recording released in 1988 had Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht) and repackaged as a single CD.
Mahler died before he could complete his Tenth Symphony — this recorded version has been realised by musicologist Deryck Cooke. He calls it "a performing version of the draft". Most of the symphony was sketched by Mahler — Cooke writes, "Mahler's actual music, even in its unperfected and unelaborated state, has such significance, strength and beauty … After all, the thematic line throughout and something like 90% of the counterpoint and harmony are pure Mahler, and vintage Mahler at that".
Chailly has a close affinity with Mahler's works and tours with this repertoire often.
"Chailly's is a noble interpretation … imbued with richness and generosity"
