Four Maori women create crossover music with strong green messages

Big Belly Woman describe the sound of their music as ..."healing vibrations melded together by traditional and modern instruments..." but please be assured that this is no "touchy feely" new age music. "Dance with the Wind" takes the listener through a unique musical journey that covers a wide spectrum of sounds, vocal harmonies and rhythms ..... and subject matter.

BIG BELLY WOMAN was formed in Ruatoki in March 1996; by a group of women who have both a love of music and a commitment to change.

Currently residing in Rawene, Hokianga, 'Big Belly Woman' have performed locally at Te Matariki Celebrations, Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival, Grey Lynn Park Festival, Tautoko FM Anniversaries, Sweet water's '99, The National Maori Midwives Conference (Whangarei), The Third Composers Musicwomen Aotearoa Festival at Te Papa, The Magdalena International Women's Performance Festival at Paekakariki, and at various local fundraisers and good causes.

The driving force of 'Big Belly Woman' consists of Mahina Kaui Karen Browne, Lavinia Kingi, Kim Halliday and Makareta Umbers.

The album was recorded in a garage (yes ... a garage!) in Rawene by Jack Lloyd Jones and was mixed and produced at Auckland's Garden Shed Studio by Steve Garden, Jack Lloyd Jones and Kim Halliday.

Tracks:

THE AWAKENING

The spiritual self, floating in space, descends into the physical world, as a new life form. The first breath of life, the beginning of man... being one with the universal rhythms, one with life ifself. HINEIWHAKAATAIA warns us that the continual pollution of Mother Earth, the violence of man against man, will eventually lead to destruction and to life less ness.

DANCE WITH THE WIND

Is about the spirit leaving the body in order to cope with the distress of sexual abuse and how that can impact on your life. The song encourages the listener to talk to someone close about what is happening, with the hope that change will occur and abuse will stop.

TIHEI MAURI ORA

Is the the promise of a new dawn, with each day being different and unique.

MAUMAHARA KOE

Paying homage to all the life-force elements that sustain and nurture us whilst we are upon this earth. It deals with last stages of the 'mate', what you envision before leaving this world.

PAPATUANUKU

This song is about the need for global action to heal Mother Earth from the devastation of pollution. We feel that this is a challenge to us all, for consistency to recycle and manage our natural resources wisely.

SONG OF THE SHELLS

Is the lament of the shells sung by the Putatara ñ the mother of all shells. Their story is about the plunder, rape and contamination of the coral reefs and seabeds.

WHAKAROKO MAI

Placing personal differences aside with your ex-partner, so that your children can better receive nurturing and positivity from both parents.

WE ARE FAMILY

A loving message about every person's need for whanau / family. We believe that you don't necessarily have to be related by blood to be family.

MANA WAHINE

Wahine toa is paying tribute to the dignity of all Women.

TE AROHANUI

Is about calling upon your Tipuna as a source of strength, in times of despair. It is a tribute to the great explorer KUPE and to the people of Hokianga.
