Superlative performances of works for cello and piano by Rachmaninov
by two of Britain's very finest musicians. Hailed unanimously by the critics as one of the finest cello and piano CD releases in recent years, this is a disc not to be missed — remarkably featuring world premiere recordings of works by Rachmaninov.
The Daily Telegraph:
"The main work here is the 1901 Cello Sonata, of which Moray Welsh and Martin Roscoe give a performance that is enormously appealing in its restraint. That is not to say that it lacks ardour. Far from it, but Welsh capitalises on his mellow cello tone and artistic sensibility to mould an interpretation that has more of a contemplative feel than is often the case. Solutions to the potential imbalence between the cello and the elaborate piano part are found not merely in terms of acoustical equilibriumbut also in the way that Welsh and Roscoe share the musical ideas and the development of them. The expressive contours of the music are refined; the dynamic shading embraces a spectrum of pianissimo as well as more fully voiced forte; and the rich seam of lyricism in Rachmanivovís melody is thoroughly explored."
