'The time spent listening to it has been delightful. Tone, enunciation, resourcefulness of arrangement and accompaniment, all are exemplary' (Gramophone)
This CD launches yet another Hyperion series. This time we are turning our attention to the rich heritage of music sung in the Anglican church, the English hymn, which has never been systematically preserved on disc. The hymns will be recorded by the mixed voices of Wells Cathedral Choir under their director, Malcolm Archer, who has made a speciality of the music and has, in fact, written one of the hymns here. This first CD presents 22 familiar hymns from the present century. Other composers on the disc include Vaughan Williams, John Ireland and Herbert Howells.
We shall illustrate the CDs in the series with photographs of English country churches. This one shows Edensor (pronounced 'Ensor') Parish Church in Derbyshire.
