In his nine Bachianas Brasileiras, written between 1930 and 1945, Heitor Villa-Lobos sought to fuse the soul of his native Brazil with the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach, a composer he venerated. The collection contains five of the Bachianas Brasileiras, including the most famous, written for soprano and eight cellos, which features the delectably floating tones of Victoria de los Angeles.
"In Bachianas Brasileiras No.5, the sheer seductive sound of de los Angeles is way ahead of her competitors and the other suites can be recommended without reserve."
