Perhaps the most ambiguous and enigmatic of all Chopin's works
Exquisite sketches…
Chopin's Preludes, viewed as a whole, are perhaps the most ambiguous and enigmatic of all his works. A disorientated Schumann saw in them "sketches, rough drafts or, if you like, remains of studies, scattered eagle feathers, and all in gaudy disorder. (…) The collection contains passages that are morbid, feverish, unpleasant; let each man find what he can here." Since then, the whole world has "found what it can" in these pieces which never fail to astonish us, inviting a multitude of musical readings. Here is that of Alain Planès, now considered one of the great pianists of our time.
