"I am most excited about my new album because it's a live concert with my brothers from Jamaica, rather than a studio recording. It's a heartfelt collection of mostly my own compositions, with some Bob Marley songs, and it's unique because this is what we do when we play live. Coming straight from the roots of Jamaica, it's groovin' and displays all of my influences." -Monty Alexander
Beautifully produced on the prestigious Telarc jazz label, the impeccable piano technique of Monty Alexander shines through a hot band.
Complimented by guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and percussion, Alexander is captured on this live recording (although don't let that deter you as it is very crisp), giving his treatment to some famous reggae standards such as Bob Marley's 'Could You Be Loved' and 'Exodus', plus a number of original compositions.
(Roger Marbeck)
"The album boasts what amounts to a dub-jazz version of 'King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown,' huge bottom provided by bassist Glenn Browne. But Alexander's own composition 'Trust' gets a wistful performance that shows off the classic melodicism and subtle dynamics of his playing..." - Boston Herald
"Alexander does an excellent interpretation of Bob Marley's tunes...his piano speaks with forceful Jamaican undercurrents...complete with the pulse of Jamaica's grooves at the heart and soul of Monty's excellent piano stylings. And that's what going home is and Monty Alexander has gone "yard" on this one." - JazzUSA.com
"The name Monty Alexander conjures up sounds of reggae mixed with jazz. This [recording] marks another winner [for Alexander] with Goin' Yard. The pianist unites with a six-piece band to deliver a live recording of music he composed as well as the Jamaican traditional "Day-O," and two Marley interpretations "Could You Be Loved," and "Exodus." - Black World Today
