'This is a must for any with an ounce of curiosity and the organ community at large owes Dr Wells a considerable debt' (Organists' Review, UK)
John Wells is one of New Zealand's leading concert organists.
He was born in England and is a graduate of Cambridge University, where he was organ scholar at King's College Chapel, and Indiana University where he received his Doctorate in Organ with 'high distinction'. He has pursued a portfolio career as organist, pianist, composer and publisher. He travels widely as a performing artist; in 1999 he gave concerts in Australia, Poland and the UK; this year he has performed at the Methodist Conference in Nuku'alofa as a member of the first orchestra ever to visit Tonga. He is a regular broadcaster on New Zealand radio and much in demand as a chamber musician.
Dr Wells is on the Faculty of the Auckland University School of Music and is University Organist, Auckland City Organist, and President of the NZ Association of Organists. He has a long association with choral music as singer, composer and conductor and was Deputy Conductor of the NZ National Youth Choir for several years. He recorded the first NZ organ CD in 1989; his fourth and fifth CDs have just been released. His 1996 Organ Concerto (now available on disc) is heading for a record number of performances for any such work from an NZ composer; this year he has written a Piano Trio and two other choral works.
