Well, we have cheated a little! Sir John Barbirolli was born in London, and the Cimarosa Concerto owes its place in the repertoire by kind permission of the Australian born Arthur Benjamin.

It does however make a most charming disc of music for oboe with the famous arrangement of the Corelli Concerto by Barbirolli, and the quite operatic concerto by Bellini.

It is performed by one of the world's accepted virtuosi of the instrument, Anthony Camden, for many years Principal Oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra, and one of Anthony's pupils, Julia Girdwood, who is the Principal Oboe of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The orchestra is the City of London Sinfonia, directed from the leader's chair by Nicholas Ward - who as all collectors of Naxos discs will know is the Musical Director of the Northern Chamber Orchestra - and the recording was made in April 1995.
