The Villa-Lobos piano series continues
Highly-praised by Artur Rubinstein at an early stage of her concert career, pianist SONIA RUBINSKY has achieved recognition as one of Brazil's outstanding pianists. She has performed widely in North America, Europe, Israel, and throughout South America, and has been heard in the United States with such orchestras as the Orchestra of St. Luke's in New York, and the symphony orchestras of Richmond, Syracuse, Phoenix, and Cheyenne. Ms. Rubinsky has also performed recitals in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Tel-Aviv, and Montevideo. She was awarded "Best Recitalist of the Year" by the Sao Paulo Association of Music Critics; the prestigious William Petschek Award; and won the Artists International Competition in New York.
During the 2000-2001 season, Ms Rubinsky will be heard with the Richmond Symphony in Virginia, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto in C major, K.467. She will also give recitals in Livermore, California, and at the Miller Theater of Columbia University in New York City. These recital programs will feature works of Brazil's Almeida Prado, along with music of Bach, Chopin and Villa-Lobos. For the Naxos label in 2000-2001, Ms. Rubinsky will record volumes II and III of the complete piano works of Villa-Lobos (a projected 9-volume set).
Ms Rubinsky has been hailed by The New York for the "visceral impact and virtuoso excitement" of her performances and, most recently, by Gramophone magazine's Bruce Morrison, who chose Ms Rubinsky's Volume I recording for Naxos of Villa Lobos' complete piano works as one of his favorite CDs of 1999. Mr. Morrison praised Ms Rubinsky for scoring in "unequivocal success" with this release, which was also nominated for a Grammy and an INDIE Award (by the Association for Independent Music) in 1999.
In addition to the complete Villa Lobos series for Naxos, Ms Rubinsky has recorded for the following labels: Nonesuch/Elektra (John Adams); Daktylos (The Itibere Family of composers); and Daghlian (Debussy, Villa-Lobos, Messiaen). Current projects include Ms Rubinsky's web page at www.mp3.com, where she has two CDs available from live performances: " Alma Brasileira" and "Sonia ao Vivo"; and her work with The New Speak Easy - an exciting and unique saxophone and piano duo with Cynthia Sikes. Their demo CD "Puttin' on the Swing" is available at www.mp3.com.
Sonia Rubinsky bean her musical studies in her native Campinas and gave her first recital at the age of six. By twelve she was performing with orchestras, and by the age nineteen she had been praised by Artur Rubinstein as a pianist of exceptional promise. Ms Rubinsky studied at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, and received her doctorate in music from The Juilliard School. Her teachers include Vlado Perlemuter, Beveridge Webster, Jacob Lateiner, Olga Normanha, and William Daghlian. Ms Rubinsky makes her home in New York City.
