Little is known about the life of the Italian composer, Francesco Onofrio Manfredini. His name may well have disappeared, had he not composed a Christmas pastorale, the final section of his twelve charming Concerto Grossi. Written in 1718, it forms one of only 43 Manfedini works that have survived. They include passages for solo instruments, many calling for virtuosity, each work being in the form of a short three movement Sinfonia. The content is generally of a light and tuneful disposition, Manfredini obviously a skilled craftsman, with a gift for easy melodic invention.
