Made at the very peak of his form, Abbado's recordings were early testimony to his commitment to 20th-century music. At the time they appeared, neither the Janácek nor the Hindemith were yet quite the modern classics they have since become, and Abbado's recording was for a while the only readily available performance for both works.
With Abbado's Italian roots and opera background he never fails to let the music "sing", and as such he has managed to reach the interest in modern music of a wider audience. The present recordings are classic examples of what the Decca recording team was able to achieve: a warm, open and natural sound.
