The English conductor Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) was renowned for his powerful advocacy of British music, giving the first performances of many important works, including Holst's suite The Planets in 1918.

During his long life, Boult recorded Holst's masterpiece five times; this being the final one, made in London in 1978. Eight years earlier he had recorded the last of his four recordings of Elgar's Enigma Variations, written in 1899.

Like The Planets, Elgar's affectionate portraits of his friends has long been a staple of the international orchestral repertory

"This magnificent performance of "The Planets", recorded with an opulent realism, brings to a final culmination Boult's supreme understanding of this work. This account of the "Enigma" Variations is also a classic; a performance by a great conductor who has lived a lifetime with this music."
- Gramophone

"This is a desirable reissue that cannot be faulted. Wonderful performances of two orchestral masterworks."
