The German conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch (born in 1923) has had a long relationship with EMI, dating from some famous Philharmonia recordings made in the 1950s (see the Strauss Horn Concertos below) to an Indian Summer with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1990s.
The venerable Dresden Staatskapelle is the principal orchestra in the Saxon city where Schumann lived between 1844 and 1850, the period during which much of his symphonic output was composed. Sawallisch's accounts of this music with the superb Desden orchestra have been much admired since their original release in 1973.
'Outstandingly good. I count these performances of the Schumann Symphonies as among the best things Sawallisch has ever done. The playing of the Staatskapelle Dresden is superlative in every department. Not to be missed.'
