Jakob Lindberg really needs no introduction. As one of the most versatile players of plucked instruments (Renaissance and Baroque lutes, Theorbo, Archlute, Baroque guitar and so on) as well as being a noted scholar of the period, he is in demand all over the world. This disc represents his 25th BIS production and shows yet another facet of his artistry. He explains the origins of these Suites on Swedish Folk Themes:
'I have been fascinated by the Swedish folk music repertoire throughout my career as a lutenist and played some of my arrangements to Robert von Bahr when we met at BIS in 1979. My first recording for him, however, was of Scottish lute music selected from 17th century lute manuscripts. The Scottish models were an important source of inspiration when I made my arrangements of Swedish folk music for the lute.
My arrangements are generally inspired by 17th and 18th century arrangements of folk tunes for lute and guitar, and I have used sonorous keys which I feel bring the music to life. This means, for example, that my guitar arrangements can incorporate strumming across all five courses, in the manner of Gaspar Sanz or Santiago de Murcia, and that I can add walking basses on open diapasons in the way Scottish lutenists did when arranging their native folk music.
My artistic models have been, among others, the Elizabethan lutenists who set 16th century popular tunes in England, the Scottish lutenists who performed their folk songs and dances on their noble instruments during the 17th century, and Santiago de Murcia, when he compiled his guitar manuscript in Mexico at the beginning of the 18th century, recollecting the street music of his native Spain'
