Both Valeri Polyansky and Alexander Ivashkin are noted for their fine interpretations of the Russian repertoire and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra under Valeri Polyansky has a large and critically acclaimed discography on Chandos.
This CD couples two of Prokofiev's finest works: the Second Symphony is undoubtedly the most dissonant and violent of Prokofiev's seven. One of the most fascinating of the twentieth century, the symphony reflects the composer's intention of writing a work 'made from iron and steel'.
The Symphony-Concerto is one of Prokofiev's last works. The cello part was written in close collaboration with Mstislav Rostropovich, to whom the work is dedicated.
