BIOGRAPHY:
What words do you use to sum up the career of one of the most successful bands in the world over the past ten years? How about "Dreams" or "Linger" or "Promises"? These are but a few simple words that evoke memories and rekindle a special bond that The Cranberries have built with their millions of fans across the globe amassed over the first ten years of their career; a career that has seen album sales in excess of 35 million copies.
The Cranberries had hardly finished school in Limerick when Dolores, Noel, Fergal and Mike signed to Island Records a decade ago with "Dreams" and "Linger" as early currency.
"Linger" was the single that eased them out into the world. And Linger it did, as both the single and the debut album, "Everyone is Doing It So Why Cant We" both became Top 10 smashes in 1993.
Their second release "No Need To Argue" sold more than 15 million copies and spun hit singles "Zombie," and "Ode To My Family."
Then came the legendary shows - the early days of Dolores playing with her back to the audience or the time they out-played headliners Suede and other such young rock luminaries. From small venues to stadium rock with "Zombie", an appearance at Woodstock II, and the 'secret' concert in Washington DC that drew over 10,000!
By the mid-90's there were sold-out tours all over the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia, including Dolores' special performance with Pavarotti at a concert for the War Child Charity and the band's performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards Ceremony.
In 1997 To The Faithful Departed sold 6 million copies with singles "Salvation" and "Free To Decide" charting No.1 in 18 different countries. But by then the band needed to get off the fast lane for the sake of their health, and of their music. They took that break. And it worked wonders.
After a two year break, the Cranberries released "Bury The Hatchet," in early 1999, a title that said it all and a selection of songs that went on to sell more than 3 million copies, backed by a world tour and a string of hit singles including "Promises," "Animal Instinct" and "Just My Imagination".
The launch of their fifth studio album, "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee", found all four members married with children; Dolores having given birth to her second child in January 2001. But all four were ready to get back on the road again, and their standing-room-only shows were a critical success.
And now, in celebration and retrospection of the first ten years, comes "Stars - The Best of The Cranberries 1992 - 2002". Jammed packed with one timeless hit after another, "Stars" delivers fond and thought-provoking memories to the devoted and casual fan alike. Also included is "Daffodil Lament", which, although never released as a single, won overwhelming support from the fans for inclusion on this collection through the band's web site. But "Stars" isn't just about looking back, The Cranberries reach forward with the inclusion of 2 new tracks, including the title track, "Stars".
