Brilliantly re-interpreting classic compositions by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins
Marsalis Music is the creation of Branford Marsalis, one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of the past 20 years.
Based upon his extensive experience as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, Marsalis recognized the need to form a label that will allow a diverse array of musicians to document their best efforts in a creative environment. The label's focus will be primarily but not exclusively on jazz, and the label will receive marketing and distribution support through its partnership with Rounder Records.
Footsteps of Our Fathers, the premiere release from Marsalis Music, features the Branford Marsalis Quartet brilliantly reinterpreting classic compositions by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, John Lewis and Sonny Rollins. While respectful of the original melodies, Marsalis's quartet utilize the material primarily as a vehicle for personal expression. Similarly, Marsalis Music will reinvent the model of the jazz record label for the new millennium.
