Glazunov remains for many of us a major player who seems to spend most of his time on the bench, waiting for an opportunity to show what he can do. He has his place in music - a respected name among a group of great Russian composers - but his music is performed less often than is the case with many lesser composers. (Though Tchaikovsky immediately recognized his precocious talent.) Tadaaki Otaka and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, on this second disc of our Glazunov cycle, now return with the third symphony. This followed the earlier symphony after a great deal of soul-searching on the part of the composer who was eager to develop a less "nationalistic" style in which to express himself. Our first release in this series - featuring the second symphony - was warmly welcomed by press and public, not least for the "highly polished performance". Music to be enjoyed.
