Michael Rabin (violin)

[ EMI Great Recordings of the Century / CD ]

Release Date: Saturday 15 February 2003

'The legendary Michael Rabin, who died tragically young, was a stupendous technician. Superb dexterity is coupled with a fine control of pitch and a wonderful singing quality in the highest register.' (Gramophone)

As Tully Potter points out in his essay accompanying this release, 'the recording unites some of the most testing solo violin music (Paganini's virtuosic Caprices) with one of the 20th century's most outstanding, and ultimately most tragic, prodigies, Michael Rabin'.

At the age of 18 he began to record for EMI and later for Capitol, and these recordings, made between 1954 and 1960, constitute his legacy, not least this legendary 1958 performance of Paganini's staggeringly difficult Caprices. Rabin effortlessly meets the technical challenges in a performance notable also for its intense musicality.
