"The Sadler's Wells' Mikado is traditional in the best sense, bringing a humorous sparkle to the proceedings which gives great delight. Clive Revell is a splendid Ko-Ko; John Heddle Nash is an astounding Pish-Tush, and it is partly because of him that the Chippy Chopper Trio is so effective."
(3 Stars Penguin Stereo Guide)

"The Sadler's Wells Iolanthe is stylistically superior to Sargent's earlier EMI recording, and is often musically superior to the Deccas/D'Oyly Carte versions. Alexander Faris often chooses untraditional tempi ... Eric Shilling is excellent ... The lovers Elizabeth Harwood and Julian Moyle make a charming duo and the pairs are splendid.

"A nicely recorded version with a strong cast. All sound as if they are thoroughly enjoying themselves. Denis Dowling (Pooh-Bah) has one of strongest voices but lacks emotion. Clive Revill revels in the part of Ko-Ko and his scenes with Jean Allister as Katisha are a joy. The orchestra is nicely balanced but there is a little distortion at the arrival of the Mikado"
