"outstanding sound-quality" (Penguin Stereo Guide on Symphony No 1)
Vladimir Ashkenazy's name is closely identified with the music of Alexander Scriabin. He is one of the few international pianists to record the complete cycle of piano sonatas and he also recorded highly-praised performances of the Piano Concerto and Prometheus - The Poem of Fire with Lorin Maazel during the 1970s.
It was during his tenure as chief conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (formerly the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) that he undertook his recording of a cycle of the symphonies and the huge Poème de l'extase. To these are added the Piano Concerto and Scriabin's only other concertante work for piano and orchestra, Prometheus - The Poem of Fire, in which the young Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski is soloist.
Gramophone magazine described Ashkenazy's recording of Poème de l'extase "the start ... is hypnotic, and the following Lento shows Ashkenazy as a master of the curvaceous phrase ... this is a thrilling disc."
