Laurent Lefèvre studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris with Maurice Allard and Gilbert Audin.

At the age of 18 he was awarded the Premiers Prix in bassoon and chamber music, and went on to win numerous international competitions, among them the Premier Grand Prix at the Concours International d'Exécution Musicale at Geneva.

At the age of 22 Laurent Lefèvre was appointed first bassoon solo in the orchestra of the Opéra National de Paris, a post he still occupies today. He is also very active as a chamber musician, serving as bassoonist of the Quintette à vent Claude Debussy and the Octuor à vent Paris-Bastille; both ensembles have won several prizes in international competitions (Tokyo, Munich/ARD and Paris). Laurent Lefèvre has made solo appearances with the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Paris Opera Orchestra, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, and the St Petersburg Camerata. He has been invited to play at many festivals: Lucerne, Davos, West Cork Festival, West Brabant Muziekfestival, Printemps Musical de St. Cosme, Juventus, Les Folles Journées de Nantes.

He taught at the Conservatoire National de Région in Boulogne-Billancourt, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris, and is currently in charge of the bassoon class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyons.
Laurent Lefèvre took part in the complete recording of Poulenc's chamber music with the pianist Alexandre Tharaud on Naxos, Ligeti's Six Bagatelles and Ten Pieces with the Quintette Claude Debussy (HMN 911624), and Mozart's Serenades K375 and K388 and Beethoven's Wind Octet op.103 (HMN 911583) on harmonia mundi.
