"There's something wonderfully engaging about Nigel North's lute playing, not surprising perhaps from someone who claims to be largely self-taught. There is an ease about his approach to this repertoire that speaks of long and detailed study of the period and its musicians, but with never a hint of the academic or desk-bound. In North's hands, this music speaks so directly that the messages implicit on so many of these pieces emerge with a clarity of poise that really draws the listener in."
(Gramophone)

To the Elizabethans and Jacobeans of early seventeenth-century England, the lute was undoubtedly the most important instrument at all levels of society. It was the principle instrument used to accompany the voice, at court, theatre or home, amateurs played it for domestic music making professionals like John Dowland entertained royalty around Europe with their own music composed and performed on the lute.

Nigel North was initially inspired into music, at age 7, by the early 60's instrumental pop group "The Shadows".

Nigel studied classical music through the violin and guitar, eventually discovering his real path in life, the lute, when he was 15. Basically self taught on the lute, for over 30 years, he has developed a unique musical life which embraces activities as a teacher, accompanist, Soloist, director and writer.

Some "mile stones" on the way have included the publication of a continuo tutor(Faber 1987) representing his work and passion for this subject. The music of J.S.Bach has been
another passion, and the 4 Volume CD collection "Bach on the Lute" was recorded for Linn Records
(Linn CKD 128).

Nigel North has been Professor of Lute at the Early Music Institute of Indiana University, Bloomington in the USA from where he continues his performing career as Soloist, accompanist and chamber musician.

On Go From My Window, Nigel North plays an 8 course Lute by Paul Thomson, Bristol, 1999, and a9 Course Lute by Paul Thomson, Bristol 1995, both after 17th century models.
