Catalpa

Jolie Holland is a very talented young singer-songwriter and musician whose poetic lyrics and music evokes a combination of spooky old time folk music mixed with jazz and blues. Her voice is full of character and has been compared to Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith (she is also a great guitar player, fiddler, and she whistles in perfect pitch!).

Jolie was one of the founding members and songwriters of the popular folk group, The Be Good Tanyas.

Jolie is a Houston, Texas native now based in San Francisco, California where she has built a strong local following. 'Catalpa' is the first album recorded under her own name. 'Catalpa' was never intended for public ears, it is a lo-fi, self produced collection of basement tapes that was recorded as song demo's for her guitar player, but people loved it so much that she started selling it at shows and on the internet. Somehow, this courageous little CD took on a life of it's own and made it around the world and back, creating new fans and sweet smelling reviews from critics where ever it landed.

Catalpa will appeal to fans of Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, Cat Power, Will Oldham and Woody Guthrie.
