"A typically adventurous exploration of purity and sensuality in French song." Recording of the Month - Gramophone Magazine (Feb 2005)
"A typically adventurous exploration of purity and sensuality in French song. Upshaw has done much to renew the traditions of the song recital, and this French-themed programme reflects her thoughtful approach. At its heart comes this hauntingly beautiful song, written by the Argentinian-born Osvaldo Golijov for Upshaw and Kalish, in the gallego language (used by some three million people in Galicia). As Upshaw herself commented to me: 'It's the saddest C major song I know'. And if there were a Editor's Choice for best booklet notes, Michael Steinberg's would take the palm." (Gramophone)
***** Five Stars (Pick of the Month) BBC Music Magazine (Feb 05)
With 'Voices Of Light', Grammy Award winner Dawn Upshaw has assembled a program of songs centered around works by Oliveir Messiaen that address the subjects of devotion, faith and, most especially love, as in Claude Debussy's Les Chansons De Bilitis.
To Upshaw, these songs, created over a span of one hundred years, represent "voices of light" - and bringing them together was, clearly, also a labour of love.
Also included in the package are extensive historical notes by Michael Steinberg and full lyrics with translations.
