'Catherine Bott shows there's more Vivaldi beyond the Gloria…'
- Classic CD
Vivaldi, notorious for his vanity, is recorded to have boasted that he could compose a concerto in all its
parts more quickly than it could be copied. While it is possible that this claim for super-human speed in composition was exaggerated, it is certainly true that he was extraordinarily prolific. It is sometimes not appreciated, even today, how much of Vivaldi's vast output was intended as 'church' music. Obviously his settings of Latin texts were written for use in religious services, but it is less well known that many of his purely instrumental pieces - sinfonias, concertos and sonatas, such as those included on this disc - were written to open or conclude services, or even used as a kind of wordless motet during them.
