"Spectacularly recorded chamber works by Mexico's master of the grotesque. Here's a disc brimful of energy. If you like the sound of Stravinsky in neo-classical mode then these spiky, rhythmically vital pieces by the Mexican Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) will be just up your street. And given the fire that these players (many from Amsterdam's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra) bring, it's hard to imagine it better done."
Gramophone Editor's Choice November 2004

Penetrating, razor sharp, sometimes humorous or (in a good way) sentimental, speaking a highly original musical language which balances between modern classical music and Mexican folk music (though seldom literally quoted), a language that goes straight to the listener's heart: that is the music of Mexico's most striking 20th century composers, Silvestre Revueltas. The Ebony Band, from the moment of its founding, has campaigned for this composer, so unjustly neglected and so seldom performed.

After Music of the Spanish Civil War (Holland Festival 1991, issued on CD by BVHaast), and concerts in 1999 on the occasion of Revueltas's 100th birthday, on 22 November 2003, the Ebony Band performed a program totally dedicated to him, plus a work by Revueltas's friend Pomar. This concert was recorded live.

The Ebony Band was founded in 1990 by Werner Herbers, solo oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. For many years he was one of the artistic directors of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. The core of the group consists of musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The Ebony Band is concerned with the performance of modern, unusual, and adventurous music, primarily from the first half of this century. Attention is devoted to the work of less wellknown composers worthy of (re)discovery.
