"A welcome addition to this complex but rewarding composer's discography. Tozer plays this music with skill, understanding and obvious high regard"
- MusicWeb Feb 2005
Few pianists tackle the works of Nikolai Medtner. Less showy than that of contemporaries such as Rachmaninov, his music resides in relative obscurity. This is a great loss, for it is abundant with ravishing lyricism and if it is not so immediate as some might expect of Russian music of this period, its dark mysticism makes intriguing listening. With this disc, Geoffrey Tozer, a stalwart champion of Nikolai Medtner, continues his acclaimed survey of the composer's complete piano works in the hope of bringing about greater recognition of this unfairly neglected composer.
Volume 8 and the penultimate disc in the series.
Geoffrey Tozer's traversal of Medtner's music offers outstanding interpretations of an important Russian composer who was the link between the romanticism of the 'mighty handful' and the music of Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
'Geoffrey Tozer's… cycle of Medtner's complete piano music contains glories and riches indeed - an unending sense of intricacy from Russia's most subtle and recondite composer'
