Robert Schumann once said to his wife, "Ah! Clara, what a pleasure to write for the voice!". The composer's enthusiasm for the world of the lied must have been catching, for his wife Clara also turned to the genre. Brahms, for his part, was to cultivate a lifelong love of folksong. His meeting with the Schumanns opened up new horizons and this CD explores the astonishing musical conversations that took place between the three friends and composers. Schöne Wiege meiner Leiden is not only a fascinating collection of songs and letters by all three composers, it is a musical and literary journey into Romanticism at its most exalted. Born in Munich, the world renowned tenor Werner Güra studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and completed his training with Kurt Widmer in Basel and Margreet Honig in Amsterdam, in addition to taking courses in acting with Ruth Berghaus and Theo Adam.
"A technique second to none, able to vary his tone, sing a lovely pianissimo and/or a long-breathed phrase with perfect control. Then no musical or verbal subtlety seems to escape him."
