Originally composed for an 1843 performance of Racine's Biblically-inspired tragedy, it became customary to perform the incidental music to "Athalia" in concert halls, in a version with specially composed text by Mendelssohn's friend, the singer, actor and director, Eduard Devrient, Devrient's narrative links provide summary of the most important aspects of play and mediate between the musical passages and the texts.
