Anna Coddington, Aidee Walker and Janna Hawkins from Hamilton make a particularly sweet brand of pop rock. This is uplifting, melodic and unassuming catchy music with a depth of quality.
Dairy-farming centre Hamilton may be the "City of the Future" but for the women of Duchess it is a city of the past.
It was while Anna Coddington, Aidee Walker and Janna Hawkins were still at school there that they formed the band Handsome Geoffrey, winning the '98 Smokefree Rockquest before reaching Auckland and eventually disbanding due to the girls pursuing their individual paths, including a Masters in Linguistics, TV and film acting and physiotherapy.
Their love of playing together had not faded though, so when Anna returned from hometown Raglan with a bunch of beautiful new songs, who else could play them but Aidee and Janna? They roped in drummer Jonny Corker and got to rehearsing their particular brand of sweet pop rock.
And now, they release their debut CD, an EP simply titled 'Duchess'. Found within is a selection of songs unique for their uplifting, melodic and unassuming catchiness, but there is also a depth of quality to the sound, a smooth, comfortable edge that makes it seem somehow familiar. This is pop with a heavy shot of whiskey....
Produced by Ed McWilliams aka Ed Cake [Bressa Creeting Cake, Anika Moa], 'Duchess' features six-tracks of their infectious pop, including bFM top 10 tune "You Buried Me Alive".
