'On The Map' is an exciting and fresh blend of traditional Irish and Pacifican music with dusty drum breaks and hip hop added for good measure.
Take some traditional Irish music - flute, bodhran, accordion, whistle, guitar, fiddle and bouzouki - and throw it together with hip hop beats, raps, samples and turntable trickery. Mix it all up in Christchurch and you get something very new and really quite exciting: an eclectic album of Pacifican and Celtic world music sounding as fresh today as when it was made.
Bazuki Joe is Micheal Considine, originally of the UK, and Jody Lloyd [Trillion, Dark Tower]. First meeting in '96, it wasn't until recently when their debut album 'On The Map' was eventually completed, time and space being what they are.
Aside from Bazuki Joe, Micheal's most recent project was with flute and whistle player Brendyn Montgomery, where they won "Best Folk Album" at the Tuis in '03, Micheal also previously winning back in '92 with his group Claddagh.
Jody Lloyd is a stalwart of the local hip hop scene, releasing the stone classic 'Shadows On A Flat Land' in '98 alongside his work as militant hip hop group Dark Tower and the more organic, "band" sounding Trillion project.
Released on Lloyd's own She'll Be Right Records, Bazuki Joe's debut 'On The Map' was pieced together over a long period of time, yet retains a consistency of sound - embracing a traditional folk approach to tunes and at times instrumentation, while nestling these intricate, rich tapestries among dusty drum breaks and funky hip hop beats.
