"If the coupling appeals this box will serve the listener well and deliver a Dvorak that is not merely affable but also lyrically urgent"
(MusicWeb Nov 2005)
"Jansons directs a radiant performance of this delectable symphony, and the EMI engineers put a fine bloom on the Oslo sound...one of the finest Dvorak CDs in the catalogue"
(Penguin Guide on No 5)
DvoĆáks Ninth Symphony, "From the new world", nowadays somehow appeals more to audiences than any of the other 8. Yet at the time they too were highly appreciated. Perhaps these days their nationalistic character has hindered an objective approach.
This set puts the Ninth somewhat more into perspective with recordings of the Fifth, Seventh and Eighth symphonies.
Great performances by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under its at the time chief conductor Mariss Jansons, who presently holds the same position at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
