"An admirable treasure trove of appealing miniatures"

MUSICWEB BEST RECORDINGS OF THE YEAR (2005)
"An admirable treasure trove of appealing miniatures. This intriguing - and musically rewarding - set could perhaps be seen as an appendix to the fascinating Decca project focusing on Entartete Musik (music banned by the Nazis). Hans Gál fled Austria in 1938, settling in the UK and finally becoming a lecturer at Edinburgh University. He died in 1987 aged 97. This survey stretches from music written when he was 21 to his Op 108, written when he was 90. The rewards are enormous"

"The booklet notes by Lloyd Moore are substantial contribution to one's appreciation of this set. And Leon McCawley has seemingly immersed himself with absolute fidelity to Gál's music, proving as effective in the more Gallic moments as he proves to be in the more cosmopolitan reaches of the Preludes. He brings out Gál's humour – and it's of the un-effortful, genuine kind – with precision and tact and he measures the Fugues with acumen. This is a most enjoyable and rewarding set, and strongly recommended"
