Richard Strauss's compositions for piano quartet offer highly interesting documentation of the gradual growth of one of the artistic giants of his century.
The recording takes us back to the composer's youth. Under the tutelage of the music director Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer the Munich schoolboy Strauss worked his way toward the composition of major works. The plan called first for a piano sonata, then for a string quartet, then for a wind serenade, and so on. How fortunate it was that his party-happy friends repeatedly inspired his compositional Muse!
