"If you want play the comparisons game, then Villazón has some of the breathy tone of Neil Shicoff, the phrasing and attack of Domingo and occasionally some of the lovelier crooning effects (without the scooping) of José Cura. But Villazón is clearly his own man, and a strong, expressive voice is already emerging. A taster, surely, of riches to come."
(Editor's Choice Gramophone Magazine April 2006)
Rolando Villazón is undoubtedly the revelation of the years 2004-2005. He has won wide acknowledgement world-wide,
including the 2005 Gramophone Award he has received last September for his Gounod/Massenet recital.
Rolando Villazón follows his Gramophone Award-winning Massenet and Gounod recital with arias spanning four languages. Opening with Offenbach's Hoffmann, with which he made his outstanding debut at London's Covent Garden in 2004, he mixes familar arias from Tosca, Cavalleria rusticana and Carmen with lesser-known numbers from Fedora and Flotow's Alessandro Stradella, a romanticised take on the life of the 17th-century composer. Russia is represented by Lensky's farewell to life from Eugene Onegin, a role Rolando sings for the first time in the 2006 season in London.
