"For this beautiful, intelligent mezzo-soprano tells fascinating stories, has exquisite diction and a voice that can be heard even in the softest of pianissimos. Where was she all this time? And on what planet did she learn to sing so wonderfully?"
(Klassieke Zaken, January 2006)
Recording of the Month (Choral & Song) BBC Music April 2006
"Her hauntingly beautiful performance of Mahler's Rückert-Lieder was a truly historic debut. This took place only as recently as last September in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The press was buzzing, not with the discovery of a new star, but a new comet rather.. Such is the power, the magnetism, the empathy and the sheer technical perfection of her singing. On Christianne Stotijn's superb debut -CD one hears a highly original combination of songs by Schubert, Berg and Wolf. She almost makes one forget that she is a singer. For this beautiful, intelligent mezzo-soprano tells fascinating stories, has exquisite diction and a voice that can be heard even in the softest of pianissimos. Where was she all this time? And on what planet did she learn to sing so wonderfully?"
(Klassieke Zaken, January 2006)
"A highly original programme sung by an up-and-coming singer who can bear comparison with even the greatest lieder-singers. She is furthermore blessed by a pianist who seems to share her imagination and freedom of spirit."
MusicWeb Recordings of the Year 2006
Debut solo recording from a truly remarkable young Dutch mezzo-soprano, Christianne Stotijn.
Stotijn is a BBC New Generation Artist 2005-6, Winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust prize 2005 and the ECHO (European Concert Halls Organisation) Rising Stars Award 2005-6.
Bernard Haitink is a strong supporter - after conducting her in Mahler's Rückert Lieder in Paris last June ("elle a stupifiée l'auditoire") he immediately invited her to Amsterdam to repeat it in 3 concerts with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, where she triumphed. ("A historic debut "," A dream debut" the Dutch press raved)
The poetic theme of this CD is 'Phantasien und Traumgestalten' 'Fantasies and Dream-figures', and it takes in many of the greatest and most complex songs of Schubert and Wolf. Stotijn and partner Joseph Breinl (accompanist to Waltraud Meier) have performed this programme a great deal in public. Stotijn's next ONYX recording will be Mahler Lieder with her other regular partner, Julius Drake
