"Here Wispelwey surpasses anything that has been done previously, and plays himself into the Bach pantheon."

"I grew up with Bach's cello suites in their classic performance by Pierre Fournier. During the time that this version was not yet available on cd I listened to Yo Yo Ma's first set of recordings. Finally, DG reissued Fournier in the originals series. Whereas I lived with the notion that I would never have to a buy another version, it was of all people my good old daddy-o that made me change my mind.
The reason for this was his attending of a performance of all Bach suites (on one evening) by Wispelwey. Especially, since I know my old man for his dislike of the authentic performance practice, I was surprised at him being blown away by Wispelwey. Having bought the cd set, I can now understand why. This is one great interpretation, that hold its own in comparison with Fourniers classic recording. Get both, they give two very different, but equally impressive renditions, of these greatest of all cello works.

Wispelwey's recording is one, in my opinion rare, example of how an authentic approach can work, and in some instances even better than a more traditional one. While he walks a thin line between diversifying and distorting, especially in the preludes, the end result is simply great. Wispelwey's approach could be described as well-balanced, well-structured "stream of consciousness". As such the performance doesn't get dull upon repeated listening, but just seems to gain in "aliveness". While all the suites are performed superbly, no. 6 stands out, in my opinion. Here Wispelwey surpasses anything that has been done previously, and plays himself into the Bach pantheon."
