Described in its first review in The Gramophone as 'a landmark in the history of the gramophone', this recording of the B minor Mass was made a couple of years after Herbert von Karajan had conducted Bach's masterpiece in Vienna at a festival in honour of the 200th anniversary of the composer's death.

As a substantial (22 minute) bonus to the complete studio recording of the Mass, this compilation presents extracts from the rehearsals for that 1950 performance. Caught by EMI's recording engineer Anthony Griffith, the voices of the two female soloists - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Kathleen Ferrier - are heard in the soprano and contralto solos and duets, including Ferrier's singing of the Agnus Dei, which it is reported reduced Karajan to tears
