Herbert von Karajan's rare 1972 recording of European national anthems makes a welcome and timely return.
Two tracks never released before turn this album into a must-have for every collector: the Greek national anthem and the Danish "King's Hymn" (the official Danish national anthem and the King's Hymn are used for different public and royal occasions and festivities).
The album also includes the chorus from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and a different kind of European anthem: Plácido Domingo singing the popular Puccini aria "Nessun dorma", excerpted from Karajan's complete 1981 recording of the opera in Vienna.
"Nessun dorma" carries a special appeal to sports fans worldwide - along with being sung at the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies, millions heard the aria during the internationally telecast "Three Tenors" concert in conjunction with the 1990 World Cup.
